Jason and I recently spent a day visiting Reed's Gold Mine. I had never been before. Unfortunately, we didn't get to mine on site due to short staffing, but we did bring some home to pan.
Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the US. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. During its peak years gold mining was second only to farming in the number of North Carolinians it employed.
The best part of coming on a short-staffed weekday was that we were able to do a self tour! It was a lot of fun to walk around in the mines by ourselves.
“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.”
