I'm filling out some REALLY important paperwork. And I am somewhat freaking out about it. It should be the easiest question of my life to answer, but I'm left stumbled and confused.
How has practicing yoga influenced you?
How has it not?! This simple question is not so simple after all. Yoga has influenced me on so many levels. Yoga has influenced me from my phsyical health, my mental wellbeing, my thoughts, my emotions, and my beliefs. It is not just an hourly routine I practice a few times a week. I live, to the best of my ability, a complete yogic lifestyle. So when asked how yoga influences me, I must think a little deeper.
Is is yoga that influenced me to... prefer vegetables to meat? or books to television? or solitude to company? Is yoga the reason I spend more money on organic groceries versus regular? or the reason I'm in "good shape" ? Did yoga influence me to read books on the mind, science, and art? Has practicing yoga impacted my style? Maybe that's why I wear "hippie" clothes? Or was it yoga that prompted me to hang tapestries of Ganesha and mandalas on my walls? Could it also be due to practicing yoga that buddhas and salt lamps now adorn my night stands and mantels?
I suppose some credit could be given, but these are all cliches. I imagine none of the above descriptions would have changed had I never picked up a yoga mat. So, how has practicing yoga influenced me?
Yoga has influenced me in so many ways - from my body, my mind, my thoughts, and my spirit. Yoga has opened my heart to love, truth, and justice. Yoga has reminded me of my wholeness. Yoga has shown me peace.
“Yoga allows you to find a new kind of freedom that you may not have known even existed.” -BKS Iyengar
Yoga has given me awareness. Before I began practicing yoga, I was so involved within the tiny confines of my mind that I missed the entire world around me. My mind, body, and spirit had become enemies and my entire being was out of sync. It was yoga that helped to bring me back to wholeness.
In practicing yogasana I learned to become aware in my body. I had forgotten that I existed just as much in my fingertip as I do in the top of my head. Yoga influenced me to make better decisions regarding my body- how I practiced, what poses to do/not to do, what to eat and not eat, what to drink not drink, what drugs to take and not take, etc. Slowly, by practicing yoga my awareness sharpened and I came to a place of harmony within my body and mind.
This isn't perpetual, and it does fluctuate but I can count of my practice to keep me balanced. Yoga has given me space where I can cultivate inner peace. This awareness yoga has given me extended beyond my physical practice and I found myself more aware of my thoughts, my emotions, and my feelings. It was a powerful shift in my life, when I was no longer victim of any of those.
So now, as I reflect on some of the ways yoga has influenced me, I feel a little more at ease submitting my answer. I take a deep breath, enjoy this moment that is, and feel at peace. Every little thing, is gonna be alright.
